WHY?
From 1066 onwards (after the battle of Hastings with the French Duke of Normandy ‘William the Conqueror’ who won the battle to rule England) a Manorial/Feudal Land/Title could be divided up upon the holder’s death for his children to inherit. This process was called ‘sub-infeudalisation’ meaning to subdivide feudal lands.

NEW TITLE NAME To ensure people knew which part was the old ‘MANOR’ and which was the ‘NEW MANOR’ they needed a name for the new manor. Sometimes they would call the OLD MANOR “GREAT” and the NEW MANOR “LITTLE”, but, mostly the old manor kept it’s original name and the new manor was named after the surname or “ORIGINAL MANOR NAME + SURNAME”. New owners of a Title would ADD or SUBSTITUTE the old “SURNAME” for their own. This falls under “CUSTOM and PRACTICE” protocol. This is why Titles have had different names throughout their history.
